Through a press release, Mrs. Debellefeuille indicated that although the federal law implementing the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) clearly states that parental insurance benefits are eligible income for obtaining the CRB, no clear direction was simply given to officials on how to interpret the criteria.
“I do not see what is so complicated, the law is already drafted so that the benefits of the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) are included in the income necessary to be eligible for the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB). It’s very clear. The government simply needs to confirm that these parents are indeed eligible for the CRB. That is all!”
However, this problem hides another much more important one: the fact that the employment insurance system is in no way adapted to the reality of women and men who wish to be at the same time mothers, fathers and present in the labor market. “The real problem is that parents who give birth should be eligible for benefits if they find themselves unwittingly unemployed after parental leave. This is completely absurd”, concluded MP DeBellefeuille.
