The appointment of Peter Schiefke to this post is immediate. He says he is eager to tackle the pressing issues that the COVID-19 pandemic has forced on immigration. Since taking office in 2015, the Member for Vaudreuil-Soulanges has held the role of Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister (Youth), Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction as well as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.
“It has been a pleasure to serve as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change for the past 15 months and to help advance some important projects that will leave a positive legacy for our children and grandchildren, says Peter Schiefke. This is an issue that I have been and will continue to be passionate about not only as a Member of Parliament in my community of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, but also in my personal life.”
Over the past year, Mr. Schiefke has led some key projects at Environment and Climate Change Canada. These include Canada’s efforts to protect 25% of Canadian nature by 2025 and the strengthening of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. He was also involved in the development of Canada’s enhanced climate plan and the Government of Canada’s plan to ban harmful single-use plastics that was announced in September 2020.
Regarding his new position, MP Schiefke mentions that Canada’s immigration system has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. He understands how necessary an effective immigration system is for families, farmers and businesses in his region and across Canada.
Peter Schiefke will join Minister Marco Mendicino in his new role.
