The mayors’ tour is taking a break this week in order to give the floor to our elected officials on the provincial and federal side. Peter Schiefke, MP for Vaudreuil-Soulanges gave us an interview on the pandemic, its achievements and the man behind the MP.
The pandemic is a big challenge for the federal government according to Mr. Schiefke. This crisis is a public health crisis, but also an economic one. The MP points out that the government has had to put in place government programs so that Canadians can continue to put food on the table.
“We put in place the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) that has helped millions of Canadians, said Peter Schiefke. You have to understand that this money was used to pay bills, buy food and keep the economy going. The government’s goal is for Canada to emerge from this crisis in reasonably good financial condition and for Canadians to be the least affected by Covid-19.”
The work of the MP for Vaudreuil-Soulanges was essential to keep the population aware of the new programs and how they work. He and his team spent the first few months of the pandemic responding to calls from citizens in the region who had questions about government programs.
“I want to thank the administrative team in my district for their help and dedication during this crisis, says Peter Schiefke. They were available 7 days a week from 12 to 14 hours a day so that the citizens of Vaudreuil-Soulanges had the best possible information. Congratulations to everyone!”
Achievements
Mr. Schiefke is proud of his record since the October 2019 election, despite the pandemic. He even believes that one of his greatest achievements is managing the current health and economic crisis. The planning and implementation of the government programs were a major challenge.
“When the pandemic started, people couldn’t have a salary when they got CERB,” says Peter Schiefke. This posed great problems especially with our volunteer firefighters. Many being on CERB, they could not answer an emergency call without being paid and therefore wasting their $ 2,000 per month. I and the members of Quebec quickly warned the Prime Minister to correct the situation. Now a person can make up to $ 100 a month and still get CERB.”
The MP does not want to ignore his love for the environment and the many projects underway or those completed since his election. Among these, there is the project to protect more than 64 hectares of forests on Mont Rigaud, for which he is pleased.
There are also the public transport projects which are dear to Mr. Schiefke. The repair of the Vaudreuil station in partnership with the municipality and the provincial government is a great achievement, according to him. He would also like to be able to move forward with the redevelopment projects of the Pincourt and L’Île-Perrot stations. Discussions with municipalities and EXO are underway on the subject.
The man behind the MP
Peter Schiefke is an active MP and can be seen with his family in the community and on social media. Asked about his vision of the family with his work, the deputy confides that the most important thing is undoubtedly his family.
“My dad left when I was 5, says Schiefke. I know what it’s like to have an absent father and how it can affect a child. My priority will always be to be with them as much as possible. Whether it’s having lunch with my kids before I leave for Ottawa or taking a family walk on the weekend, I want them to know that Daddy’s here.”
He knows that if his family starts to have issues with the distance, there will be no question. He will always choose his family ahead of his job.
That being said, the MP for Vaudreuil indicated to the Prime Minister that he would very much like to run again if an election were to occur in the spring.
“I have the support of my wife and kids to run again, said Peter Schiefke. I have issues that I would like to take forward in our region before I leave.”
Finally, he believes that going out into the community with his family is the best way for him to seek the views of the population. According to him, it is a strength to be able to know the emotional state of people while being with family.
