Rigaud wrestles with ragweed | VIVA MÉDIA Skip to main content

Ragweed is a very common weed in Quebec and is also present in Rigaud. Beginning in mid-July, ragweed begins to flower and produce pollen. This is the main cause of the allergy that affects one in five people.

The City of Rigaud wishes to eliminate ragweed on its territory in order to reduce its effects. To do this, citizens are invited to pull or mow ragweed on their land or prevent it from growing.

Pull or mow ragweed

On residential lots or small lots, it is best to pull out ragweed as soon as you see it. On larger areas, mow ragweed two (2) times per year, in mid-July to mid-August. This will greatly reduce the amount of pollen in the air. It is possible to dispose of the uprooted plants in the garbage. It is not recommended to place them in the compost to avoid contamination.

Let’s stop ragweed from spreading

In order to limit the presence of ragweed, people can use mulch or ground covers in bare areas of lawns, seed the ground, plant other vegetation there, or improve the quality of the soil with fertilizer because it is difficult for ragweed to grow in dense and fertile lawns.

Responsibility of the citizen and the City

Landowners are responsible for looking after the ragweed that ends up on their land, in addition to the continuity of their land, even if it is on the City’s boundaries or in a ditch. You can pull or mow this plant, depending on your preferences and the size of your land. For its part, the City is contributing to this collective effort by cutting ragweed on its lands.
