Due to the success of the pilot project carried out through the Ecocentre Network in its territory last year, the Vaudreuil-Soulanges RCM announces that polystyrene (number 6 plastic) is accepted for good in the four ecocenters in the territory.
The goal of the RCM in promoting this new material is to give an infinite life cycle to styrofoam as well as to containers made of number 6 plastic of the residents in the region.
Polystyrene from the following three categories is accepted:
- Food: meat and fish trays, yogurt containers, coffee cups, etc.
- Packaging: protective packaging for electronic devices, household appliances, etc.
- Construction: white, pink, blue and green insulating panels.
Marie-Eve Gingras-Gosselin, communications advisor at the Vaudreuil-Soulanges RCM, explains that the containers must have the recycling symbol #6, be clean, without labels and without wrapping film. She adds that this material is not accepted in the collection of recyclable materials.
Circular economy
The RCM mentions that the polystyrene received at the ecocenters is collected by the Polymos company, located in Terrasse-Vaudreuil, which densifies the material and ensures the recovery of polystyrene through the various partnered recycling channels. It believes that this is an opportunity to develop a circular economy project in the territory in addition to reducing the quantities sent to landfill and avoiding stimulating the oil industry.
The Vaudreuil-Soulanges RCM invites citizens to view its new video clip on the addition of polystyrene. For the list of accepted materials or for more information on the Ecocentre Network, visit www.tricycle-mrcvs.ca or call 450 455-5434.
