As part of its 175th anniversary and to contribute to the sustainable development of the community by increasing the forest cover of its territory, in order to improve its places of exchange and to offer a bequest to future generations, the Municipality wished to proceed in planting good-sized trees. Thus, 175 trees were planted at various sites in the territory, such as at the back of the eco-centre, at the Parc Marie-Reine-Laberge and Parc Nolasque-April.
A symbolic planting of a large fruit oak tree therefore took place in the presence of elected officials, former municipal officials and many volunteers this afternoon, in the heart of one of these green spaces which received a significant amount of trees. Formerly called the Parc Domaine, the site, whose natural state and tranquility are well preserved, is now named in honor of the first mayor of Sainte-Martine in 1845, Parc James-Perrigo. This is the very first place named in his honor.
The Municipality took advantage of this tree planting ceremony in order, among other things, to salute and thank the work accomplished by all the municipal elected officials of the last 175 years who, through their citizen involvement in democratic life, have shaped the community of today. “It was also an opportunity to pay tribute to all the men and women who lived, who loved and who built Sainte-Martine, who contributed to creating a united and proud community”, mentions the Mayor Maude Laberge. A tribute to the lovers of the environment who have managed to preserve resources; to the protectors of the heritage who have enhanced its wealth; to the organizers of cultural and sporting life who have nourished memories and built from scratch the leisure infrastructure that we know today; to farming families who have always valued the land; to dynamic business people who have contributed to the economic boom; and to volunteers from all quarters. No matter what involvement in the community, Sainte-Martine of today is the sum of the actions of the past.
Remember that the Municipality’s 175th anniversary began in winter 2020 with the fabulous Festi-Glace held by the Association des pompiers de Sainte-Martine and that several activities and gatherings were planned for last summer. «Although the vast majority of projects have had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, some of them may see the light of day before the end of the year,» said the counsellor, member of the organizing committee for the 175th , Carole Cardinal.
Video clips will therefore be produced in collaboration with citizens of Sainte-Martine and will highlight important elements of its culture, such as agriculture, the environment, the built heritage, economic life as well as sports and leisure. A children’s book will also be produced in collaboration with students from École Sainte-Martine.
