At MWCN our mission is to serve the English-speaking community of the Montérégie West Region. We provide a variety of social and cultural activities and assist members in gaining access to health and social services in English.

The Haut Saint Laurent region has an office in Huntingdon referred to as the Wellness Centre. In October we started a new series of information sessions called ‘lunch and learn, lets talk Tuesdays’. The sessions take place every second Tuesday. A healthy lunch is prepared by the students from the Huntingdon Adult Education and Community Centre with a small cost to attendees.

Our kick off session was with Susan Allvey from the Alzheimer’s Society of Suroît. Susan shared her expertise with us and encouraged anyone with additional needs to reach out to her. Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neudegenerative disease that destroys brain cells, causing thinking and memory to deteriorate overtime. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging and is irreversible. Whether you want to learn more about the services they offer or find out specific information, the Alzheimer Society has the education and resources to help you. The office is centrally located in Valleyfield and has been serving the MRCs of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Beauharnois-Salaberry, Haut-Saint-Laurent, Kahnawake and the greater Chateauguay area for over 25 years. Susan can be reached at 450 373-0303.

In addition to the Alzheimer Society, we had a session on Post Retirement Income, as presented by Todd Coté, from Assante Wealth Management.

At MWCN we feel information sharing and learning are key to aging well. In fact, learning something new will boost self confidence and self-esteem, helps build a sense of purpose and will foster connections with others. Its important to keep the brain active as we get older and learning new skills or about new subjects is a great way to keep the mind sharp.

Upcoming sessions within the lunch and learn series are exploring: Philips’s lifeline, the number 1 medical alert device in Canada; understanding and maneuvering the new MRC Transport service; and becoming aware of fraud as presented by a Sûreté du Québec officier.

We are fortunate to have so many partners within our communities to come and share their expertise with us.
